Signs & Symptoms- JUlia, t.
Bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression, is a mental illness characterized by alternating periods of mania and depression. During manic episodes, an individual may exhibit impulsive behavior, inflated self confidence, a decreased need for sleep, and increased irritability. During depressive episodes, a person may have low energy, feelings of worthlessness, changes in weight or sleep, and suicidal ideation. In Bipolar I, manic episodes last at least seven days and depressive episodes last around two weeks. In Bipolar II, individuals experience hypomanic episodes. These are shorter and less severe than manic episodes, but similar. In this type of bipolar disorder, depressive episodes are usually worse and have longer durations. Besides manic and depressive episodes, people with bipolar disorder often struggle with substance abuse or even other mental illnesses.
